The short answer
Start with the original file, check Shorts eligibility and the selected channel, then adapt the title and description. A successful upload is not enough: verify the final status and visibility.
1. Keep a master file, not another copy
Before posting to Instagram, keep your original export in Photos or your production folder. This gives you a version independent of platform effects and download options. Do not add a social-network watermark to that master.
An authorized tool may retrieve a previously published video when the API provides it. That does not make every Instagram link downloadable: access permissions and account eligibility matter.
2. Check what counts as a YouTube Short
YouTube says newly uploaded square or vertical videos up to three minutes can be categorized as Shorts. Upload dates and some channel categories also matter; consult the official documentation for specific cases.
A longer Reel does not become a Short because of its filename or hashtags. Prepare a compatible version if Shorts is your goal. A vertical 9:16 frame is a practical creative choice, not a guarantee of classification or views.
3. Separate the title from the description
Explain the video’s promise without relying on the Instagram caption. The YouTube API allows 100 characters in the title. Its description limit is 5,000 bytes, which is not identical to 5,000 characters, particularly with emojis.

Description openingHere is how I prepare content, its cover and its caption before publishing. Demonstration example: @relaypublish.
Put the important point first. Details, credits and useful links belong in the description. Hashtags are not a substitute for a clear title.
4. Recheck music rights and the cover
Choosing a track inside Instagram does not automatically grant rights for YouTube. Use music with a license you understand, or check YouTube’s options before reusing the audio. You remain responsible for footage, music and permissions from people featured.
Do not assume the same thumbnail is available everywhere. Shorts and other formats can offer different cover controls. Prepare the image, then check the destination’s actual options.
5. Verify the result in the right channel
Check the channel name before uploading. After processing, open the final link and verify the visibility reported by YouTube. Restrictions and account checks can differ from your intention to publish publicly.
In Relay, Instagram must be an authorized professional source and YouTube a selected destination. Relay prepares metadata and tracks the upload; it does not bypass YouTube’s rules. The public app is in preparation: check current capabilities before relying on an integration.
Before you move on
- Keep the original file and check eligibility.
- Select the correct YouTube channel.
- Adapt the title and description; confirm music rights.
- Verify final status and visibility after processing.
